Bikes and breakages

As I think most of my regular readership are aware, I had a bit of an accident just under a fortnight ago. I was cycling along and someone opened a car door in front of me. Needless to say I crashed and injured my knee substantially.

Anyway, upon leaving the scene of the accident I did a quick visual inspection of my bike and concluded that it was not damaged to any great degree. This was a mistake.

Last week I nearly came off my bike again followig a quick downshift into a low gear only to discover that the gear selector has been bent in the accident and had forced it’s way into the back wheel causing it to stop rotating. This was not terminal providing I remained in high gears when cycling.

This evening I was leaving work and was just about as far as I could be from anywhere useful when there was an alarming clunk at the rear of the bike and the wheel appeared not keen to turn. So I walked the bike up to arch and dismantled the back end to discover that the axle on the back wheel has snapped. I suspect this may have also happened during the accident but it has taken this long for the bearing to fail.

I am NOT amused by this. I already know that the selector will be £30 to get replaced and getting the axle replaced (as well as the bearing which failed by firing ball bearings across the full width of Hyde Road) will not be cheap. It’s just a good jobI won’t really be needing it much over the next fortnight and then subsequent six weeks.

In Other News…

I have arranged a school placement. :-) This is a good thing and is also in the southlands so I get to spend some time at home before I start training which should keep living costs down and the ‘rents happy.

Otherwise pretty much nothing has changed in life…

This should change in a couple of weeks when I begin this slightly insane endeavour
